ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) on Monday submitted an adjournment motion in the Senate to discuss the ‘security calculus in the region and implications of extending drone strikes to Balochistan’ brought into focus by the killing of Taliban leader Mullah Mansoor in a drone strike the other day. If reports of the killing of Mullah Mansoor are accurate, it means that five years after Osama Bin Laden was killed by the US forces in Abbottabad, Taliban leader Mullah Mansoor whose presence in Pakistan was denied, was also killed in Pakistan territory by the US. This strengthens the perception that elements in the state are harbouring militants, the motion, brought by Farhatullah Babar, says and warns ‘it will give new ammunition to forces inimical to Pakistan.’ Even if Mullah Mansoor has not been killed, the drone attack in Balochistan is in itself a dangerous escalation, and crosses the ‘red lines’ reportedly set long ago, stipulating that strikes in Balochistan were a no go area. Reports that the Pakistani leadership was informed well before the drone strike have further complicated the situation, adding to the gravity and urgency of the matter.
