ISLAMABAD: The federal government has, without consent of the Sindh government, decided to extend duration of Sindh Rangers special policing powers in Karachi. The federal government is likely to use special powers to restore Rangers policing powers in Karachi. This important decision has been taken viewing deserted Rangers check posts as they have stopped snap checking in the metropolis. They have been limited to their headquarters now. According to a private television channel report, the centre has informed the Sindh government that it had powers to give Rangers extension. “The federal government will extend duration of Rangers stay in the city with special powers against heinous criminals by issuing a notification if that the Sindh government does not sign the summary in this regard in next 24 hours,” the center said. It should be noted that the provincial government has not yet signed a summary in this regard despite the passage of three days of expiration of Rangers special policing powers. Top decision makers of Sindh and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leadership are due to meet in Dubai today to decide upon the extension of Rangers’ special policing powers in Karachi. The recent controversy over the arrest of Asad Kharal – a purported friend of the home minister – who has been accused of misappropriation of government funds and having links with criminals will also come under discussion during the two-day meet in Dubai. PPP’s Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari flew to Dubai for the meeting from Karachi while his father and party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has already reached UAE from London. Important PPP players including Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali, Faryal Talpur and Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Sial would also attend the meeting chaired by Zardari.
