ISLAMABAD: The Institute of Space Technology (IST) on Saturday concluded a four-day activity based programme to celebrate ‘World Space Week’ (WSW) with a view to generate space awareness among the general public and students. The theme for WSW-2016 was “Remote Sensing: Enabling Our Future”, which celebrates Earth Observation from Space for the betterment of the human race. On the occasion, a host of classic Earth Observation missions, such as the U.S. Landsat mission, the work of intergovernmental categories such as GEOSS Category on Earth Observations and emphasises applications like environment and agriculture monitoring, land use mapping and new uses such as location based services were highlighted. According to the official statement, around 150 different schools and colleges from Islamabad and Rawalpindi participated in 165 different space themed events and activities of WSW-2016 at IST. Over 7,000 space enthusiasts’ including participants and visitors witnessed and participated in the event. The revolution in the space technology was inevitable, said the statement. It was the need of hour to have a deep knowledge of space technology and its applications for a country like Pakistan in order to meet the challenges of having accurate information of weather forecasting, disaster management, mobile and satellite communication, it added. The importance of space technology could not be denied as it would ultimately lead to the solutions of the world’s problems and betterment of mankind and IST is contributing to the cause in true sense, the statement said.
