ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed the review petitions filed by the Sharif family and Jehangir Tareen against SC judgement over stopping the Sharif family’s sugar mills from crushing operations. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Faisal Arab took up the case for hearing on Monday. During the course of the hearing, the Sharif family took the plea that work had been stopped at sugar mills after the SC judgement and the country might face sugar shortage. Therefore, the court should review its decision taking into consideration the sensitive nature of the matter, they prayed. The court remarked that the respective case had been started at the Lahore High Court. “Let the LHC decide the issue.” During the course of the proceedings, Barrister Ali Gohar, the counsel for JWD Sugar Mills, appeared before the court and informed that the LHC had granted relief to his client over the point and pleaded the court to withdraw petition. Upon this the court allowed the petitioner to withdraw the application and disposed of the case. It is worthy to mention here that the apex court in its decision on February 9 suspended the LHC decision regarding the shifting of mills from northern to southern Punjab and halted the crushing operations of the Ittefaq, Chaudhry and Haseeb sugar mills. The apex court handed the case down to the Lahore High Court (LHC) and instructed the LHC chief justice to hear all sides of the case and deliver a verdict within a week.
