ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid and Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique on Tuesday briefed Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan leaders Awais Ahmed Noorani and Pir Ijaz Ahmed Hashmi about the government’s stance on the Panama leaks. During a meeting held here at the residence of Rafique, the JUP leaders appreciated the prime minister and his family for presenting themselves for accountability, saying this was an important step towards strengthening democracy in the country. Separately, Rashid and Rafique called on Jamaat-e-Islami chief Sirajul Haq in Islamabad and discussed with him political matters with special reference to the Panama leaks and executions of JI leaders in Bangladesh. Talking to newsmen after the meeting, the JI chief said that he had discussed with the ministers the Panama leaks issue and the inhuman treatment being meted out to the JI leaders in Bangladesh. Haq said the Panama leaks were an international issue. He said the JI had always been against corruption. He said that from the very beginning, the JI had been demanding that an impartial commission should hold enquiry into the matter so that the nation could know the facts. Haq said that despite running a movement for a corruption-free Pakistan, the JI had adopted a non-emotional stance on Panama leaks and demanded formation of a commission headed by the chief justice. He said that Rafique had told him that the government had finalised the terms of reference for the commission. He said the JI would study the ToRs and give its point of view on these. Talking to the media, Rafique said that final decision would be taken after a transparent investigation into the Panama leaks. He said that commission’s ToRs would be discussed with all political parties.
