ISLAMABAD: European Union (EU) Ambassador Jean-François Cautain on Tuesday presented proposals on electoral reforms during his meeting with Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice Sardar Raza. Based on fifty recommendations of the EU election observation mission – deployed for May 2013 parliamentary elections – the ambassador presented the final report of EU Electoral Follow-up Mission (EFM), which visited Pakistan in February to discuss the electoral reform process with key stakeholders. The envoy reiterated EU’s strong support to democracy and electoral reforms in Pakistan, evidenced by the participation of EFM in the last three parliamentary elections and extensive support to the parliament and Election Commission of Pakistan. He welcomed the establishment of the Electoral Reform Committee, but stressed need to implement necessary reforms to promote more inclusive, credible and transparent elections in time before the next elections in 2018.
