ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday provisionally suspended Sindh High Court’s verdict ordering removal of money laundering-accused model Ayyan Ali’s name from Exit Control List (ECL). A two-member SC bench headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan issued the order after hearing arguments of Customs counsel Farhat Nawaz. It also sought a comprehensive reply from Ayyan’s counsel Latif Khosa within seven days on the petition filed by Customs. Nawaz took the plea that the model was being tried in the money laundering case and if her name was removed from the ECL, she will flee the country and the ongoing proceedings against her will come to a sudden halt. The SHC has not heard the Customs authorities fully before ordering removal of her name from the ECL. He pleaded that the SHC verdict should be set aside and Interior Ministry be ordered to keep her name in the ECL. Sardar Khosa, meanwhile, took the plea that the Customs authorities were not representing the federal government and he has objections over several aspects of their petition. He said that he wanted to file a reply in this respect. When the court asked him how many days it would take to file the reply, Khosa said he be given seven days to file a comprehensive reply. When the court talked of suspending the SHC decision provisionally, Khosa opposed it, saying this should not be done as there were no evidence available against his client, nor can SHC decision be suspended on the grounds of insufficient evidence. The court remarked that SHC decision will have to be suspended till the decision of the case. It rejected his plea and provisionally suspended the SHC decision and adjourned the hearing for one week.
