ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Khursheed Shah Wednesday said Nawaz Sharif has finally decided to connect with the masses but it is now too late for him to benefit from. “I have been advising him to hold rally for last four years but he didn’t pay any heed to me then … when people are in power they pay heed to nothing … power distorts people’s vision,” he told reporters, adding wrong advices were being given to Nawaz Sharif. He maintained that every political party has right to hold rally for its existence, however Nawaz has been too late to do so. There are risks in staging a rally but it allows politicians to meet people, he added. “Supreme Court disqualified him and this is the only way he can save himself,” Shah said and advised the former PM to trust the power of parliament, public support and Bhutto’s ideology. Shah recalled that the PPP had tried to have Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution, under which Nawaz Sharif was disqualified, reverted to their original form but the PML-N opposed it. Shah suggested that ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) can only win the NA-120 by-poll if they appoint Begum Kulsoom Nawaz as the candidate. “Qatari Prince’s letter caused major damage to Nawaz … Now PML-N can win NA-120 by-election only if Begum Kulsoom is the candidate,” he said. Shah opined that National Assembly’s term should be cut to four years. He also opposed early elections, saying that election should be held after the National Assembly completes its constitutional term. Talking about the issues faced by country, he said only Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) can help bring back the prosperity. Published in Daily Times, August 10th 2017.
