ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has arrested former managing director of the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) Tahir Basharat Cheema on the allegation of misuse of authority. Cheema is accused of disregarding, disobeying and deviating from the recruitment rules and making illegal appointments in GEPCO during his stint as PEPCO MD. According to NAB, an inquiry against these allegations was initiated against the accused person upon directions of the Lahore High Court. An accountability court (AC) has granted a 14-day physical remand of the accused. During the hearing, investigation officer maintained that the ex-MD resorted to graft and illegally recruited nearly 500 employees. He said that Cheema gave different contracts to private companies and earned millions of rupees through unlawful means. However, the accused denied the allegations and stated that bureau’s stance was not based on truth.
