ISLAMABAD: Despite a ban, unabated motor boating in Rawal Lake continues to put health of residents at risk. The unchecked water boating in the lake is continuing and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) that is responsible to control this illegal activity is not paying any heed to this illegal act. The water boating in Rawal Lake is banned but this illegal activity is continuing without any fear of the concerned departments causing pollution in the dam. Boating in Rawal Lake with out life jackets and ignoring safety measures are putting the lives of the visitors at risk. The boats used for rowing in the lake are in an “extremely terrible condition.” Small and big holes are found on some of the boats from which water oozes into the seats. A visitor Pervaiz Malik said that majority of the sailors are not having experience and underage to run these boats. Such a practice could lead to an accident. He said that there are about 150 boats in the lake that are being operated without life jackets and the condition of boats are also tattered. The lack of concern from CDA and the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration have apparently turned a blind eye to the illegal activity. Last year in November, an assistant commissioner imposed a ban on motor boating in the lake for two months to control water pollution. An official of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that the boats are considered as a major source of pollution in the lake and criticised the officials of capital administration and civic agency for not enforcing the ban in letter and spirit. CDA Member Environment Sanaullah Aman refused to comment for the measures taken by the civic agenncy about this illegal activity.
