ISLAMABAD: First-ever mayor of Islamabad Sheikh Ansar Aziz Monday said the first business session of Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) would be held in the mid of this month. He and the deputy mayors were likely to get powers in next 15 days while the whole process of devolution of powers from Capital Development Authority (CDA) to the IMC would be completed within two months, he said in an interview with APP. The Mayor said the provision of clean drinking water to the residents of Capital city was top priority of the local government. He said a main pipeline would be laid to Ghazi Barotha Dam to meet the water requirement of the twin cities for next 50 years. Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was taking keen interest in the project and the Council of Common Interests (CCI) in its recent meeting had also given its approval. The Mayor said since the local government institutions could easily be accessed by the public and that was why they could serve them better. He said to provide better transport facilities to the citizens the IMC would run busses on the routes connected with the metro stations. Replying to question, Sheikh Anser Aziz said for the provision of recreational facilities to the residents the local government would expand the Margzar Zoo, besides upgrading parks. Playgrounds in the city, especially those which remained neglected by the CDA, would be improved so as to provide youth to take part in sports activities, he added. He said the IMC would introduce a proper Taxi Scheme in the Capital so as to provide a proper transport to the people. To a question about health facilities, he said four small hospitals would be constructed in the city. The Mayor said almost 11,000 employees of various departments of the CDA would be placed at the disposal of IMC. He said there were three major issues of the Capital – construction of roads, sanitation problems and water shortage. It was his priority to resolve the three issues after attaining the powers, he added. Sheikh Anser Aziz said a proper solid waste management system would also be introduced for disposal of garbage and its recycling to generate electricity. He said the sanitation staff would be divided among the Union Councils for their proper utilization. It was the vision of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to beautify the Islamabad according to international standards and he and his team would do their best to realize the same, he pledged.
