ISLAMABAD: The prevailing tension and confusion regarding the law and order situation in the twin cities in the wake of the upcoming “lockdown” announced by the PTI came to an end when Imran Khan announced to convert the November 2 “lockdown” into a ‘thanksgiving rally’. The confrontation between law enforcement agencies and supporters of Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had been reduced and the situation became normal soon after the announcement made by PTI’s chief at Bani Gala. Imran Khan, while addressing the party workers gathered at Bani Gala announced to call off the ‘lockdown programme’ as the Supreme Court had started the investigation of Panama leaks. Mr. Khan told party workers to go home rest and reach Parade Ground on Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. where a “Youm-e-Tasshakur” (day of thanks) would be celebrated. Following the PTI’s announcement, the government ordered the removal of containers blocking streets in Islamabad. The containers had been placed throughout the city in light of the PTI lockdown. The administration removed the containers from the entry points of the Red Zone and opened the roads for traffic. The Red Zone was sealed on Monday to protect sensitive buildings situated on the Constitution Avenue. The hurdles erected by the administration on Korang Road had also been removed. Police started removing their barricades from different routes and entry points. They also started releasing the PTI workers from private houses kept in different sectors, a police source told Daily Times. Local PTI officials claim that 383 workers were put behind bars, including more than 100 students. As per police record, around 20 cases are registered against these workers in different police stations of the capital city. Meanwhile, PTI leader, Dr. Waseem, visited the “Parade Ground” and launched the preparations for the ‘thanksgiving’ rally announced by the party chief whereas the national leadership of the PTI including Jahngeer Tareen and Aleem Khan also visited the site. The Islamabad Police has devised a security plan for the PTI gathering while the Islamabad Traffic Police has also announced a special plan to avoid traffic jam and inconvenience. Earlier, in continuation of the prevailing tension since last Thursday, dozens of PTI workers tried to approach the residence of Imran Khan on Tuesday and faced a strong reaction by the law enforcement agencies. The police had also arrested Muneeb Iqbal, the grandson of Allama Iqbal and PTI Punjab Information Secretary, Andleeb Abbas, along with 50 other party protesters, who were attempting to cross a check post, but released both leaders after a brief detention. To disperse the PTI supporters, the police fired rubber bullets at Abbas and other PTI workers, including women, as they tried to break barriers to march towards Imran’s residence. Although, the opinion of the general workers of PTI is divided on the chairman’s decision to call off the protest but the leadership of Islamabad is hopeful about a huge crowd in the ‘thanksgiving rally’.
