Shoppers will love it or hate it – the UK’s first Marmite flavoured popcorn is set to go on sale. Sweet caramel popcorn glazed with the yeast spread will be available in 75g and 21g packs. It comes amid soaring sales of the traditional cinema snack, now worth more than £55m a year. Marmite maker Unilever has teamed up with popcorn firm Joe & Seph’s to create the new snack. Retailers stocking it initially will include Selfridges, Ocado and Lakeland. Unilever spokeswoman Chloe Irwin said, “Popcorn is one of the biggest success stories in the past five years. Marmite fans have been calling for this for a long time.” Last year the firm launched Marmite and Pot Noodle flavoured Easter eggs. Marmite, for so long loved and loathed in equal measure, was introduced to Britain in 1902 and now has annual sales topping £25m. Marmite is the brand name for two similar food spreads: the original British version, since 2000 a Unilever product; and a modified version produced in New Zealand by Sanitarium Health Food Company and distributed in Australia and the Pacific. Marmite is made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing. Other similar products include the Australian Vegemite, which is saltier in taste, the Swiss Cenovis and the German Vitam-R.
