The beautiful and mysterious country of Iceland is famous for many things, including for its geysers, harsh climate and famous singer, Björk. Only a few people know that the Blue Lagoon is also located in Iceland. But they should. Because this place is truly like heaven on Earth! We’re definitely putting this one on our list of travel destinations and we think you should to. The Blue Lagoon is a unique, natural outdoor swimming pool. It’s also a world-renowned spa resort. National Geographic recognised the Blue Lagoon as one of the 25 wonders of the world. A geothermal power station was built here in 1976. A 200-metre-wide and a two-kilometre-long hot lake appeared here due to natural processes. According to the legend, an Icelandic energy specialist suffering from psoriasis discovered the healing properties of the lake’s waters. By swimming in the lagoon, he was able to cure his disease. The local water has a unique chemical composition that includes minerals, silica and algae. The bright blue colour is caused by the silica. Different weather makes the water look different. For example, the colour can vary from different tones of blue to light green. Silica creates a white precipitate, which makes up the therapeutic clay on the bottom of the lake. Tourists from all over the world come to see this magical water source. What a wonderful and unique destination! Local Icelanders also love it.
