A touching letter from Princess Diana sent the year she divorced Prince Charles is up for auction. In the handwritten letter sent to Spinal Research charity worker Simon Barnes, the princess revealed she was looking forward to seeing the back of 1996. But Diana showed she was always thinking of others, telling her friend, “I hope 1997 will be a happy year for you.” The letter is currently being sold online with Boston-based RR Auction, with bids closing on tomorrow (Wednesday). It has an estimate of $2,000. In the letter dated December 21st 1996, Diana wrote, “Thank you so much for thinking of me at Christmas time-After all the changes that have taken place this year it’s marvellous of you to be so thoughtful. I hope 1997 will be a happy year for you-personally I can’t wait to get out of this one!” 1996 was the year Charles and Diana divorced, having announced their separation in 1992. Her tragic death in a Paris car crash was in August 1997. A spokesman for the auction house said, “The letter from Lady Diana shows her caring loving side, that each of us can instantly recognise-and remember about her-even when her own marriage may have been was falling apart. Diana had an openness, and engaging quality- that’s what everyone loved about her, and that can be seen in this letter.” It is being auctioned alongside a personal handwritten Christmas note from “Granny” The Queen to Prince William which is expected to fetch £1,400. The brief note on Buckingham Palace paper is understood to have been sent alongside an advent calendar and reads, “William, I hope you enjoy opening this each day. Granny.” Auction Vice President Robert Livingstone described it as “A seldom-encountered piece of correspondence from within the royal family, enhanced by its fitting Christmas time association.” The note has an estimate of $1,800, roughly £1,400. A photograph of the young Queen Elizabeth and her sister Margaret is expected to fetch $1,000. Also up for grabs, with an estimate of $1,300 is a letter from King Edward VIII sent before he became King during World War I. The letter written on July 4 1918 from the British Forces headquarters in Italy to Captain Faussett reads, “War how it does drag on tho. it’s going to last another 10 years, that’s what I feel about it tho. of course the Americans are going to pull us thru we should be done without them!!”
