LAHORE: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s wife, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz won the NA-120 by-election on Sunday after a close contest with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s (PTI) candidate Dr Yasmin Rashid. According to unofficial results, Kulsoom attained 61,254 votes, 14,188 votes ahead of opposing candidate, Dr Yasmin who got 47,066 votes. The NA-120 seat was left vacant after the Supreme Court (SC) disqualified the former prime minister in the Panama Papers case. The poling began at 8am went uninterrupted throughout the day until it ended at 5pm. All 220 polling stations were declared senstive and Pakistan Army and Rangers deployed their troops to provide security to the voters and the polling staff. Speaking to the media in London earlier on Sunday, Sharif applauded his daughter Maryam over successful management of Kulsoom’s election campaign and informed the media about his wife’s medical treatment. “Kulsoom’s treatment is underway and another surgery is planned in the coming days,” Sharif said. Following the outpour of unofficial results, Maryam Nawaz delivered a victory speech and said, “The people have given their verdict on the verdict today”.
