Approximately a year has passed since one of Pakistan’s best known Sufi qawwals left us. Amjad Sabri was gunned down in a targeted attack on 16th of Ramazan last year. Sabri was a Pakistani singer and a fan of the Sufi Muslim tradition. Son of Ghulam Farid Sabri of the Sabri Brothers, Amjad emerged as one of South Asia’s most prominent qawwali singers, often reciting poems written by his father and uncle. The blissful voice of Qawwal Amjad Sabri (Late) was silenced in a targeted killing at Liaquatabad Town in Karachi last year. The deceased Amjad Sabri was heading to a television studio when armed motorcyclists pulled up beside his car and fired bullets, killing him on the spot. Sabri’s last musical project was with Coke Studio. He performed an outstanding qawwali, “Aaj Rang Hai” with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in Episode 7 of Season 9. Sabri’s performance on the platform came out to be his first and last one. The targeted killing triggered a nationwide outpouring of grief. The legendary Qawwal Amjad Sabri will remain alive in the hearts of his fans to this day and will continue to in future with most remarkable and memorable qawwalis, such as Tajdar-e-Haram, Mera Koi Nahin Hai Teray Siwa and Bhar do Jholi. <iframe src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/X-CbQGcQ0Qw” width=”800″ height=”450″ frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen=”allowfullscreen”></iframe>
