The fifth day of the second Test match between Pakistan and West Indies did not spring any surprise as Pakistan easily cruised to a 133-runs victory. While Yasir Shah took a five-for in the four innings and finished the match with a second 10-for of his career, the buzz surrounded Younis Khan after his 100 in the first innings, 33rd of his career, just after a month of falling victim to dengue. The rest of the team also looked solid. Mohammad Nawaz might be the weaker link in the team, but he needs time to settle in the longest format of the game. Moreover, he is given the responsibility of fifth-bowler as well as a handy batsman down the order who can score some valuable runs. Following the win, not only Pakistan won the series, but a few records were also shattered. During the match, Misbah and Younis Khan had become the most prolific partners for Pakistan, crossing the earlier record held by Mohammad Yousaf and Younis Khan. Following the win, Misbah reached the top of the table of Asian Captains with most wins — 10 victories — beating M S Dhoni and Saurav Ganguly’s joint record of nine victories. Moreover, Younis Khan has climbed to the second spot in ICC Test Rankings, while other batsmen including Misbah, Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq have also made progress. Yasir Shah has also broken into the top five bowlers in the ICC rankings, where he is tied with Stuart Broad at number five. Like the earlier series, the tempo of the team has remained the same. While the series has been a success overall as was expected after the lacklustre performance of West Indies in the limited over fixtures, there were expectations that Misbah might experiment with a few things before the all-important tour of New Zeeland and Australia this fall. Azhar, Younis, Misbah and Shafiq have been the mainstay of the Test team since Misbah took over in 2010. Although Pakistan has achieved much success with this team, not much has been done for the grooming of next generation that will replace the likes of Younis Khan and Misbah. Babar Azam was given the opportunity in the first game but had to be substituted in the second as Younis Khan was available. In the tour of Australia and New Zealand, Pakistan will need proper backups for every position. Wasim Akram had recently pointed out the same problem with the team in a TV show that if Yasir Shah gets injured, Pakistan does not have an immediate replacement. Therefore, the coaches should keep this aspect in mind. There is no doubt that the team is one of the best Pakistan has ever had, and it has the capability to give a fight no matter what the conditions are. We at Daily Times congratulate Misbah-ul-Haq and Pakistan Cricket Team on their series victory and hope that they continue with their form in upcoming tours as well. *
