How good is the milk you give your child, mix with your muesli or simply make tea with? The news is not a good one as a total of 12 famous brands have been found indulging in adulteration. Reportedly, a report submitted to the Supreme Court (SC) Lahore Registry regarding the quality of packed milk revealed that almost all brands were involved in selling unhygienic milk. It was stated in the report that almost all milk samples contained ‘adulterants’ such as cane sugar and metal components. The findings come in the wake of an order passed by the SC seeking a report on the quality of packed milk being consumed by citizens. Most of the adulteration is done to increase the solid-not-fat (SNF) content of the milk. The proportion of SNF determines the price a milk supplier gets. Therefore, there is a tendency among suppliers to add adulterants like sugar, salt and starch to increase the SNF content. Tragically, the use of adulterated milk is causing cancer and other diseases among citizens. While the intervention of the Supreme Court in this public interest matter is welcome, the issue is serious enough to jostle the concerned authorities, which need to wake up and take urgent measures for the elimination of adulteration. The report has raised serious concerns about the safety of public health, which is constantly at risk at the hands of dishonest people. It is a terrible practice and citizens are the ultimate sufferers of this criminal activity going on unabated all over the country. It is shameful that corporate concerns are playing with public health for monetary gains. How come that our government fails to address this serious issue of unfit milk being sold under the banner of top brands? Unfortunately, this is a neglected subject that requires a great deal of attention, as there is a glaring absence of safeguards on food items in Pakistan. The perpetrators of this crime against humanity sell unhygienic milk openly and without any fear of being caught or punished. It appears as if a food mafia has been created that has made a joke of people’s health and physical well-being. There is a need to take stringent measures to deal with the menace of adulteration. Only making laws is not enough; the implementation of food safety rules is necessary. Government needs to enforce a regular inspection regime to save the public from the evil of adulteration and unhygienic food practices. An effective monitoring system must be implemented to check the quality of raw food available in the market. The government needs to wake up and take solid steps to stop the sale of unhygienic food items in the market. Proper rules and regulations and their implementation are necessary to save people from catching deadly diseases due to the consumption of unhygienic milk. *
