Sir: Man is restless and war-like by nature. His desire to dominate and his ambition to enslave, others had been the main motive behind war. These are also psychological weaknesses of man, which compel him to make himself superior and stronger than others. That is why he has been fighting wars. There have been wars from very beginning of the world. In the past, wars were generally fought for the conquest and glory. The Greeks were the first to start wars and the Roman Empire was the result of their conquests. The world has also observed two Great Wars, which ruined the whole humanity. The past wars were limited but now the wars are very disastrous. The thought of a nuclear war is very frightening for the people because the atomic war can set the whole world on fire. Then no living thing would survive on the surface of the Earth. The beautiful cities would turn into ashes and the land would become barren. The evils and horrors of the war are countless. It would endanger life and cripple human beings. There would be death and destruction everywhere because nuclear weapons are used in the wars. The fighting forces as well as the civilians are killed. Millions of people are killed, wounded and disabled. Countless women become widows and children become orphans. War destroys the economy of a country. It paralyses industries, agriculture and communications. Post war consequences are very dangerous. Many diseases break out and play havoc. Hunger and poverty take the whole world in their grip. Eatable articles become dear, and discomforts spread in all walks of life. Man today is standing at the brink of destruction due to the inventions of the atom bomb, hydrogen bomb and the napalm bomb. If such bombs are used in the wars, then the whole humanity would be annihilated from the earth and all living things would cease to exist. ANUM NADEEM AHMED Karachi
