Terror outfit Jundullah resurfacing

By Faraz Khan

KARACHI: After a year and a half, Jundullah, a militant organisation, which had gone underground, has resurfaced again in the city and police officials believe that the Al Qaeda and Taliban linked outfit is presently plotting terror activities and target killings.

Jundullah, also known as ‘Army of God’, was established by Sheikh Ataur Rehman alias Umer alias Ibrahim alias Zubair.

Rehman, who holds an MSc degree from Karachi University was trained in Afghanistan and later, he established the militant organisation in 2003. At present, Rehman is imprisoned in Karachi Central Jail after the Anti-Violent Crime Unit arrested him in 2003 from his house in Model Colony. The organisation is presently being run by Al Qaeda commander Hamza Jofy alias Haji Mumtaz, an Arab militant, who is operating it from Miran Shah.

The organisation had gone underground following a three-hour long encounter with law enforcers in Shah Latif area on Jan 29 2008, in which four Jundullah militants and two police officers were killed while a key member Qasim Toori was arrested.

But after a raid at a house in Shah Latif area some days ago, officials believe that the terrorist outfit is back in action. On July 20, a man named Ghulam Mustafa killed his neighbour and fled after the murder in a white color Honda City car bearing registration number AFT-790.

The police conducted a raid at the suspect’s house in Shah Latif area where they discovered four live bombs, hand grenades, Jihadi literature, police uniforms, pistol, mobile SIM cards and others items.

It was then found that Ghulam Mustafa was a Jundullah militant and residing there along with his wife Kazbano. The defunct militant group that was supposedly wiped out is likely to hit the city once again. Investigation has revealed that Ghulam Mustafa, 37, hails from Sinjhoro, District Sanghar in interior Sindh. He was a tenant of Feroz Khan, a hairdresser, who rented his house to Mustafa through an estate agent in the vicinity.

After learning about Ghulam Mustafa’s native area through his national identity card, which he submitted to Feroz, the law enforcement agencies conducted a raid in Bakhtawar Goth and detained his family. However, the family was later released them after they denied having any knowledge about Ghulam Mustafa’s whereabouts or his links with Jundullah.

“Ghulam Mustafa and two of his organisation members Haider and Waqas, who frequently visited his house, were plotting terror activities,” Investigation Officer Mukhtiar Sariyo told Daily Times.

Ghulam Mustafa married Kazbano some ten years ago but has no children. Earlier, he resided with his three younger brothers named Sarwar, Sattar and Habibullah, in Bakhtawar Goth within the limits of Sukkhun police station.
