President, COAS discuss possibility of operation in Swat

* Briefing part of consultative process before Zardari’s US visit

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani discussed the possibility of a military operation in Swat where the Taliban have refused to lay down weapons despite a peace deal, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday.

They also discussed the military operation in Lower Dir and the army chief said no one would be allowed to challenge the writ of the government, according to the channel.

A press release by the Presidency said the briefing was part of meetings and briefings before President Asif Zardari’s forthcoming visit to the US.

The COAS and the president also discussed “matters pertaining to regional situation and professional capabilities of Pakistan’s armed forces,” the statement added. daily times monitor/staff report
