HYDERABAD: Growers have realised that at this moment, when the agriculture sector is facing many challenges in cultivation, they seem unable to get proper yields. Hence it is required to apply new methods of cropping for future sustainability. They were taking at an interaction within growers, officials of Sindh agriculture research, extension, and community and Fatima fertilizer manufacturers under the banner of “mega field day” in village Baqar Khan Nizamani, Tando Muhammad Khan District, which attracted a large number of people. They said not only water; growers must see status of soil, authentic seeds and fertilizer for nurturing of crops each plant to address the need of food security. The mega field day event was arranged by Fatima Fertilizer on Friday, which attracted representatives of grower organizations and government officials. The growers present on the occasion claimed to have got results in shape of yield increase after fertile use. Mahmood Nawaz Shah vice president Sindh Chamber of Agriculture pointed out that growers are fighting alone in any difficult situation to save their crops and get required yields. The devastated floods for two consecutive years (2010, 2011), growers were left alone to bear the losses of destruction of standing crops and government did not come to rescue the major economic sector, agriculture, he said, adding that since then growers come to various forums frequently to raise their voices but it seems all is going in vain. As far as better yield is concerned, he said, the field staff needs further orientations, as they work on ground and deal with entire process from sowing seeds, growth of plants and harvest. They must know how to take care of crops and live happily. Sindh Agriculture Extension Director General Hidayatullah Chhajro said crops need proper land management, seed and water. But, he said Sarsabz fertilizer is found favorable to increase yield of crops. These are basic requirements for growers, who must be aware about this practice. He said due to newly emerging challenges growers may test soil before selecting crops and sowing seeds. Because, the decision would be made as per the soil status for any seasonal crop to avoid any loss. Sindh Abadgar Board Chairman Haji Abdul Majeed Nizamani said: “when we claim to have been agriculture country, we must have new techniques at the time as the entire sector is facing challenges in terms of land degradation, water shortage, salinity, availability of unauthorised seeds in market and unawareness about importance of green fertilizer.” Nizamani appreciated the Fatima fertilizers to ensure maintaining quality and win the trust of growers. Naseerullah and Zeeshan Saleem of Fatima Fertilizer claim to have got better result of using green fertilizer in the recent wheat crop and growers have seen 26 percent increase in product. Agriculture Research Director General (DG) Noor Muhammad Baloch, DG Agriculture Engineering and watercourse Muhammad Ramzan Baplani and others also participated in the meeting and gave suggestion for coping with emerging challenges to agriculture sector.
