KARACHI: The Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) is planning to launch a massive countrywide campaign against adulteration during which laboratory reports of 13 different products will be issued by its mobile lab on the spot and legal action initiated at the same time. Addressing a conference ‘I am Consumer’ organised by the Consumer Rights Protection Council (CRPC) to mark the World Consumers Day at the National Museum Auditorium, PSQCA Director General Eng Khalid Siddiq warned the people involved in adulteration and selling substandard products to immediately stop such practices or be ready to face the music. Praising the efforts of the Consumer Rights Protection Council for Consumers’ awareness, the PSQCA DG said that in today’s world consumers were more aware of their rights and they were now registering their complaints with the authorities, which was encouraging. “Anyone cheating consumers will not be spared and at the same time people providing quality products to consumers will be appreciated,” he said. Khalid Siddiq said that the PSQCA with the help of the CRPC would soon launch the consumer awareness drive. CRPC Chairman Shakil Baig stressed the need for united efforts for consumers’ awareness. “One individual or organisation cannot accomplish this task. We all should join hands in the larger interest of the public,” he added. He also presented a resolution, which was widely supported by the audience. It demanded that people involved in adulteration into be brought a court of law and also urged judicial officers to award them exemplary punishment so they should not play havoc with the lives of the people. Shakil Baig lauded the efforts of the PSQCA DG for improving capacity of its mobile laboratory from three tests to 13 now with on-the-spot results. “Awareness campaign will also be launched for educational institutions, including universities, colleges and seminaries,” he said. Representing the Commissioner’s Office, ACG Shah Zeb Shaikh appreciated the efforts of the CRPC Chairman and his team, and assured them of full support from the Commissioner’s Office in this drive. Association of Karachi Nimco and Sweets President Shaikh Mohammad Tehseen said such activities should be held on a regular basis. Abdani Group of Schools Chairman Abdul Majeed Abdani said that the CRPC had become a sigh of relief for consumers. PEAK Chairman Shahzad Akhtar said that on completion of exams, such campaign would be launched in private schools. National Alliance for Food Safety (NAFS) President Dr Awais Rana also spoke on the occasion.
