CALIFORNIA: Qualcomm, the world’s biggest producer of mobile phone chips, asked the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Friday to block sale and import of new iPhones within the country. The company claims that Apple is violating six patents that deal with phone’s battery life extension which the accused used without permission. None of the patents are important to a standard, Qualcomm says, which means licensing is not required, as it is with the other patents the two companies are in disagreement over. According to sources, Qualcomm has also filed a lawsuit against Apple seeking monetary compensations. Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm’s general counsel, says in a statement that Apple continues to use Qualcomm’s technology while refusing financial compensations. These lawsuits aim to cease Apple’s violation of six patented technologies. “Qualcomm’s inventions are at the heart of every iPhone and extend well beyond modem technologies or cellular standards.” he added. Apple had filed two lawsuits against Qualcomm earlier this year, accusing the chip providers of abusing its prevailing market position and catering practices that harm the entire industry. “They supply us with a single connectivity component, but for years have been demanding a percentage of the total cost of our products – effectively taxing Apple’s innovation.” Apple said in an earlier statement. The company also accused Qualcomm of demanding compensations of technology breakthroughs they have nothing to do with. Qualcomm said it hoped the ITC would initiate an investigation in August.
