DAMB: A major part of the coastal area facing Damb village located in Sonminai has been eroded resulting in serious loss of property in the area. It is posing serious threat of further damaging the entire Damb village which will be a national catastrophe. Sea erosion is a natural phenomenon that occurs along the coastal area, however, at times, such erosion may result in loss of property and life if it occurs in the area inhabited by the human being. Along the coast of Pakistan the most seriously affected area affected by sea erosion is Damb which is located in the Miani Hor. In the past a major portion of this coastal town was eroded by the action of the sea which resulted in scouring of a major part of costal market (bazar). The sea erosion has already engulfed the office of Pakistan Coast Guard located in the area and it has not totally submerged. The process of erosion started on the morning of April 16, 2017, during the high tide, massive erosion has taken place in the northern-western part of the Damb village which according to an estimate has eroded an area of about 8 hactare and cause serious damage to the area. It has damaged about 200 shops have been damaged. The marginal area of the only seafood processing plant of the area has also been eroded. It has also affected the profile of the area and now the fishermen are facing difficulty in docking their fishing vessels. CARD-Pakistan, which is local Community Based Organization alongwith its partner organization CARD (Balochistan) and AGAAZ has acted promptly and informed the community of the erosion upheaval in the area and kept a vigil for the evacuation. Muhammad Anwar, Executive Director of CARD (Pakistan) has urged the concerned authorities mainly Balochistan Coastal Development Authority, Fisheries Department, Government of Balochistan and local administration for acting promptly for control of sea erosion in the area. The urged the need for remodelling of the incomplete Fish land Centre at Damb and construction of a sea wall along the entire north-western side of Damb village. This action is urgently required to save the complete destruction of the village especially major damage to the houses and market of the area. The erosion will seriously affect the livelihood the area as fish landing and marketing will be hampered CARD (Pakistan) has immediately contacted national experts and institutions in Pakistan. Muhammad Moazzam, Technical Advisor of WWF-Pakistan while explaining the reason of excessive erosion in Damb attributed it to unplanned construction of the landing jetty. The entrance of this landing jetty has serious affected the flow of the current in the area. A large number of eddies are form in the resultant bay facing the town. Miani Hor is known to have fastest current in Pakistan exceeding in some places to more than 3 m/sec. This fast speed of current, income tidal flow because of spring tide and persistent eddies, resulted in major erosion of the area. He stressed the need for construction of a protective sea wall along the Bay in front of Damb village and also on south of the area to ensure that this important fishing centre may not be engulfed by the sea. On the request of coastal community, a team of experts from National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) immediately rushed to the area and has collected information and data about the erosion. They have recorded currents, waves and sediment samples which will be examined in the laboratory. According to the experts of the NIO the main cause of the erosion in Damb in on account of change water dynamics in the area because of unplanned construction of the breakwater wall of the landing jetty which has resulted in excessive erosion in the bay in front of Damb Village. They also urged for construction of protective wall around the village.
